Vaastu Colours — Room by Room and Direction by Direction

The colours traditionally suggested for each direction and room, and how to use them in a modern home.

Why colour matters in Vaastu

Vaastu links each direction with an element and a planet, and suggests colours that support them. The common thread is simple: light, soft colours in most rooms, warmer colours where there is fire, and heavier, earthy colours where stability is wanted.

By direction

  • North-east — white, cream, light blue, light yellow; keep it the lightest part of the house.
  • East — white, light blue, light green.
  • South-east — orange, pink, peach, light red (fire).
  • South — red, coral, orange shades in moderation.
  • South-west — beige, light brown, earthy tones (earth).
  • West — blue, white, grey.
  • North-west — white, cream, light grey (air).
  • North — green, light blue (Kubera and Mercury).

By room

  • Living room — white, cream, light yellow, light green.
  • Bedroom — light pink, beige, light green; master bedroom in earthy tones.
  • Kitchen — orange, yellow, cream.
  • Puja room — white, cream, light yellow.
  • Children's room — light green, light blue, cheerful pastels.
  • Study — light green or cream.

Colours to use carefully

Large areas of black and very dark colours are traditionally avoided in living spaces, as is too much red in bedrooms. Accent walls, cushions and art are an easy way to bring stronger colours in without dominating a room.

Exteriors

Light colours such as cream, light yellow and off-white are the usual choices for the outside of a house; they also keep a house cooler in hot climates.
