What is Kundli matching?

Kundli matching — Kundli Milan or Guna Milan — is the traditional Hindu way of checking the compatibility of a couple before marriage. The most widely used method in North India is Ashtakoot, the "eight kootas", which compares the Moon signs and nakshatras of the bride and groom and awards up to 36 points (gunas). South Indian families often use the related Dashakoot (ten porutham) system.

The eight kootas

  • Varna (1 point) — spiritual compatibility and temperament, from the Moon sign.
  • Vashya (2) — mutual attraction and influence.
  • Tara (3) — the birth stars counted from each other; linked with health and fortune.
  • Yoni (4) — physical and intimate compatibility, from the animal symbol of each nakshatra.
  • Graha Maitri (5) — friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs; mental compatibility.
  • Gana (6) — nature: Deva (divine), Manushya (human) or Rakshasa (fierce).
  • Bhakoot (7) — the distance between the Moon signs; family welfare and prosperity.
  • Nadi (8) — Adi, Madhya or Antya; health and progeny. The same Nadi scores 0.

How to read the score

Traditionally, 18 points is the minimum for a recommended match, 25–32 is good and 33–36 excellent. The score is only a starting point: astrologers also look for cancellations of Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, compare the Manglik status of both charts, and study the full horoscopes and dashas. Many families today treat Guna Milan as one input among many, alongside the couple's values, education and families.

Why the birth time and place matter

The Moon moves through a whole nakshatra in about a day, so a few hours can change the nakshatra and therefore several kootas. MyPujaWorld finds the exact coordinates and time zone of the birth place — including daylight saving and historical time changes — and calculates the Moon's position with the Lahiri ayanamsa.

For a personal reading of both charts, you can ask an astrologer on MyPujaWorld.

Frequently asked questions

How many gunas should match for marriage?

In the Ashtakoot system a total of 18 out of 36 is traditionally the minimum; 25–32 is considered good and 33 or more excellent. Astrologers also look at doshas, cancellations and the full charts.

What is Nadi dosha?

Nadi dosha occurs when the bride and groom have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), scoring 0 of 8 points. It is considered the most important koota, though classical texts list exceptions.

Is Kundli matching based on the Moon sign?

Yes. Ashtakoot Guna Milan compares the two Moon positions — rashi and nakshatra. That is why the birth time and place matter: the Moon moves about one nakshatra a day.
