Career Astrology — How to Read Career and Profession in Your Kundli
How Vedic astrology reads career: the 10th house and its lord, the planets in it, the 2nd, 6th and 11th houses, the Sun and Saturn, the D10 chart and the dashas that bring job changes and promotions.
The houses of work
In Vedic astrology the 10th house (karma bhava) is the main house of career, status and reputation. Three more houses complete the picture — together called the artha trikona, the houses of wealth and work:
- 2nd house — earnings, savings and family business.
- 6th house — service, daily work, employees and competition; strong for jobs.
- 10th house — profession, authority, fame and the kind of work you do.
- 11th house — income, gains and the network that helps you rise.
Step 1: the 10th house sign
The sign on the 10th house colours the style of work: fire signs (Mesha, Simha, Dhanu) favour leadership and initiative; earth signs (Vrishabha, Kanya, Makara) practical, steady and financial work; air signs (Mithuna, Tula, Kumbha) communication, ideas and dealing with people; water signs (Karka, Vrishchika, Meena) care, research, healing and creativity.
Step 2: the 10th lord
The planet ruling the 10th house, and the house it sits in, is the most important single factor. A 10th lord in a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) or trikona (1, 5, 9) promises a strong career; in the 11th, good income from work; in the 6th, success through service and competition; in the 8th or 12th, career that involves research, sudden change, foreign lands or behind-the-scenes work. A 10th lord that is exalted or in its own sign is strong; debilitated, it gives results after struggle.
Step 3: planets in the 10th
Planets placed in the 10th house describe the field of work — see planets and professions. The Sun or Mars in the 10th is especially praised (dig bala, directional strength) for authority and action.
Step 4: the significators
The Sun is the karaka of status and government, Saturn of work, service and perseverance, Mercury of business and Jupiter of wisdom and advisory roles. Their strength modifies everything above.
Step 5: Dashamsha (D10)
Astrologers confirm career indications in the Dashamsha, the tenth divisional chart, which magnifies the 10th house. Its lagna, the placement of the D1 10th lord in it and planets in its kendras refine the reading.
Step 6: timing
Career events happen in the dashas of the 10th lord, of planets in the 10th, and of the lords of the 2nd, 6th and 11th — and when transiting Jupiter or Saturn touch the 10th house or its lord. See dasha and job change.
These are traditional principles of Vedic astrology. A real reading weighs the whole chart — lagna, house lords, divisional charts (especially the D10 Dashamsha for career), dashas and transits — so treat this as guidance and consult an astrologer for decisions.
