Bedroom Vaastu — Bed Placement and Sleeping Direction

The south-west master bedroom, which way to sleep, where to put the bed, wardrobe and mirror, and bedrooms for children and guests.

The master bedroom

The south-west (Nairutya) is the most stable corner of the house and is traditionally given to the head of the family. Children's rooms are placed in the west or north-west, and guest rooms in the north-west. A bedroom in the north-east is traditionally avoided for a married couple, though it is considered acceptable for children or elders who spend time in prayer.

Sleeping direction

The best known Vaastu rule is about the head: sleep with your head to the south for deep rest, or to the east, which is said to help memory and is often recommended for students. Sleeping with the head to the north is traditionally avoided — it is the direction in which the head of the deceased is placed. West is considered acceptable by many.

Bed and furniture

  • Place the bed in the south-west part of the room with its head against the south or west wall.
  • Leave space on both sides of a double bed and avoid placing it under a beam.
  • Wardrobes and heavy furniture against the south or west walls.
  • A single mattress for a couple is traditionally preferred to two joined ones.
  • Keep the area under the bed clear of clutter.

Mirrors, screens and colours

Traditionally a mirror should not face the bed; cover dressing-table mirrors at night or place them where they do not reflect the bed. Televisions and computers are also kept away from the bed. Soft, light colours — beige, light pink, light green, cream — are preferred to bright red or black.

Children's rooms

Put the study table so the child faces east or north while studying, with good daylight. Keep the room cheerful and uncluttered; sleeping with the head to the east is often suggested for students.

Frequently asked questions

Vaastu traditionally advises against it; cover the mirror at night if it cannot be moved.
