Living Room Vaastu — Seating, Colours and Décor

Where the living room goes, how to arrange seating so the family faces east or north, and what décor to choose or avoid.

Where the living room goes

The living room is the space where the family meets guests, so Vaastu places it in the north, east or north-east of the house, where it gets light and air. A north-west living room is also considered good for social life.

Seating

Heavy furniture — sofas, cabinets — is placed along the south and west walls, so that people sitting on them face north or east. The head of the family is traditionally seated in the south-west of the room, facing north or east. Keep the north-east corner of the room light: a plant, a small water feature or simply an open space.

Light, air and the centre

Large windows in the north and east, light curtains and an uncluttered centre make the room feel open. Avoid a heavy table or pillar right in the middle of the room if you can.

Décor

  • Choose pictures of nature, deities, family and happy occasions.
  • Traditionally avoided: images of war, weeping, wild animals attacking, or sinking ships.
  • A clock on the north or east wall; televisions on the south-east wall.
  • Plants such as money plant, tulsi (outdoors or on a sunny balcony) and bamboo are popular; thorny plants such as cactus are traditionally kept outside.
  • Fresh flowers and a diya on festival evenings.

Colours

White, cream, light yellow, light green and light blue are the usual Vaastu suggestions. Strong colours can be added as accents in cushions or art.
