Direction for study

For students, Vaastu recommends facing east — the direction of the rising sun and of learning — or north while studying. The west of the house (the zone of Varuna) and the north-east are traditionally good places for a study room. Saraswati, the goddess of learning, is often given a small image above or near the desk.

Home office

For work, many consultants suggest facing north, the direction of Kubera and of new opportunities, with the desk in the south-west or west of the room so that you sit with a solid wall behind you. Avoid sitting with your back to a door or window; a wall behind you gives stability.

Setting up the desk

• Keep the desk rectangular, clean and free of clutter; papers in closed storage.
• Put the computer in the south-east part of the desk, the fire zone of electronics.
• Books and files on shelves on the south or west wall.
• Good daylight from the north or east, and a lamp on the south-east side of the desk.
• Avoid sitting directly under a beam.

Colours and habits

Light green, cream and light yellow are said to help concentration. A short prayer or a moment of silence before starting work, a tidy desk at the end of the day and fresh air are habits that help as much as directions.
