Vivah (Hindu Marriage) Puja in Bengaluru · Tamil
The Hindu wedding ceremony (vivah sanskar) unites the couple before Agni, the sacred fire, through rituals such as kanyadaan, panigrahan, saptapadi and sindoor daan.
Why is Vivah (Hindu Marriage) Puja performed?
Vivah is one of the sixteen sanskaras. The couple takes vows before the fire as witness — to share dharma, prosperity, love and responsibility for life.
Who performs it?
Every Hindu community, with rich regional variations — pheras in North India, saptapadi and mangalsutra in South India, saat paak and shubho drishti in Bengal.
When to perform it
The wedding date comes from the Vivah muhurat in the panchang, usually matched with the couple’s horoscopes (kundali milan). Chaturmas, Kharmas and Adhik maas are avoided by most families, and the main pheras are timed to the auspicious lagna.
Preparing at home
Book the pandit early — wedding season dates fill up months ahead. Agree on the order of rituals and their length with both families, arrange the mandap and havan kund (many venues require permission for an open fire), and assign people for kanyadaan, the jaimala and carrying the puffed rice.
After the puja
After the pheras come rituals such as sindoor daan and mangalsutra, blessings from elders, the bidaai and, in many communities, the griha pravesh of the bride into her new home and games such as finding the ring.
Regional traditions
North Indian weddings centre on the pheras around the fire; South Indian weddings on the tying of the mangalsutra (thali) and the saptapadi; Bengali weddings on shubho drishti, sindoor daan and the saat paak; Gujarati weddings include the hasta milap and mangal pheras.
Things to avoid
Underestimating the time needed is the most common problem — share a written schedule with the pandit, photographer and caterer. Check fire-safety rules at the venue in advance, especially abroad.
Puja vidhi — step by step
- Ganesh puja — Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles, with akshat, flowers, durva grass and a sweet.
- Kanyadaan — The bride's parents place her hand in the groom's.
- Panigrahan — The groom takes the bride's hand with Vedic mantras.
- Laja homa and pheras — Offerings of puffed rice into the fire and circling the fire.
- Saptapadi — Seven steps together, each a vow.
- Sindoor and mangalsutra — The groom applies sindoor and ties the mangalsutra.
- Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.
