About ISKCON Temple Bengaluru

The ISKCON temple on Hare Krishna Hill in Rajajinagar is one of the largest Krishna temples in the world and one of Bengaluru's best-known landmarks. It is run by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), the movement founded by Srila Prabhupada in New York City in 1966.

The temple has six shrines. The main altar is dedicated to Radha and Krishna; the others honour Krishna and Balarama, Nitai and Gauranga (Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda), Srinivasa Govinda (Venkateswara), Prahlada Narasimha, and Srila Prabhupada himself. Visitors notice the gold-plated dhwaja-stambha (flag post), about 17 metres high, and the gold-plated kalasha shikhara of about 8.5 metres that crowns the main tower.

Free prasadam is served to visitors during darshan hours. The temple is also the home of the Akshaya Patra Foundation, which began here and now provides school meals to children across India.

Festivals are the best time to experience the temple at its liveliest. Janmashtami, Krishna's birthday, draws huge crowds with midnight celebrations and children's events such as Krishna costume, drawing and storytelling competitions. Radhashtami and Gaura Purnima are also celebrated on a grand scale, with kirtan, abhishekam and special offerings.

History

The temple was built in the 1990s on a hillock in Rajajinagar, in north-west Bengaluru, and was inaugurated in May 1997 by Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma, then President of India. It was conceived as a centre for spreading the teachings of Srila Prabhupada through temple worship, kirtan, festivals and food distribution, and it quickly became one of the most visited temples in Karnataka.
