About Kadu Malleshwara Temple
The Kadu Malleshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Mallikarjuna, and gives its name to the Bengaluru neighbourhood of Malleshwaram. 'Kadu' means forest in Kannada — a reminder of the thick greenery that once surrounded the temple and still shades the hill on which it stands.
The temple is built in the Dravidian style. Directly opposite is the Nandishwara Teertha (Basava Teertha) temple, where water flows from the mouth of a stone Nandi into a sacred tank; the spring is traditionally regarded as the source of the Vrishabhavathi river.
The main festival is Maha Shivaratri, when thousands of devotees from across Bengaluru visit through the night for abhishekam and darshan. The temple is easily combined with a walk through Malleshwaram's old streets, famous for flower sellers, traditional eateries and puja shops along Sampige Road and 8th Cross.
History
The temple dates from the 17th century — 1669 — and was built under Venkoji (Ekoji), the step-brother of the Maratha king Shivaji, whose family ruled the region from Thanjavur. It is one of the few surviving monuments in Bengaluru from the period of Maratha rule.
