Protection & peace
Vehicle Puja in Singapore · Hindi
Vahan puja blesses a new car, bike or truck for safe journeys — often done at a temple or at home on the day of delivery.
Why is Vehicle Puja performed?
It seeks the protection of Ganesha and Hanuman for everyone who travels in the vehicle.
Who performs it?
Very common across India; also done abroad, often at a local temple car park.
When to perform it
On the day of delivery, or on an auspicious day such as Dussehra, Akshaya Tritiya or a Thursday; see our vehicle purchase muhurat dates.
Preparing at home
Wash the vehicle, keep a garland, coconut, kumkum, lemons and a small diya. Many people take the vehicle to a nearby temple where a priest performs vahan puja daily.
After the puja
Drive the vehicle forward over the lemons to crush them, and make the first trip to a temple or with family.
Regional traditions
In South India ash pumpkins are broken in front of new vehicles; in Maharashtra and Gujarat a swastik is drawn in kumkum on the bonnet.
Things to avoid
Don’t place a lit diya or camphor on or near the fuel tank; keep the flame away from the vehicle.
Puja vidhi — step by step
- Ganesh puja — Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles, with akshat, flowers, durva grass and a sweet.
- Swastik and tilak — A swastik is drawn on the vehicle and tilak applied.
- Garland and coconut — The vehicle is garlanded and a coconut is broken in front of it.
- Lemons — Lemons are placed under the wheels and crushed as the vehicle moves forward.
- Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.
