Meaning in English
Opening: Cleaning the mirror of my mind with the dust of my Guru's lotus feet, I sing the pure glory of Rama, which gives the four fruits of life. Knowing myself to be without wisdom, I remember Hanuman, son of the Wind — give me strength, intelligence and knowledge, and remove my troubles and faults.
Verses 1–4: Glory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue, who lights up the three worlds; Rama's messenger, abode of matchless strength, son of Anjani and the Wind. Mighty and brave, you drive away bad thoughts and keep company with good ones; golden-coloured, finely dressed, with earrings and curly hair.
Verses 5–8: You hold the thunderbolt and the flag and wear the sacred thread. Embodiment of Shiva and son of Kesari, the world bows to your radiance. Learned, virtuous and wise, you are always eager to serve Rama, and love to hear his story; Rama, Lakshmana and Sita live in your heart.
Verses 9–12: You took a tiny form to appear before Sita and a fearsome one to burn Lanka; in a giant form you destroyed the demons and completed Rama's work. You brought the Sanjeevani herb and revived Lakshmana, and Rama embraced you with joy, saying you are as dear to him as his brother Bharata.
Verses 13–16: Rama said that even a thousand mouths would sing your glory. Sages, gods, Narada, Saraswati and the serpent king — even Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions — cannot fully describe you. You helped Sugriva meet Rama and regain his kingdom.
Verses 17–20: Vibhishana followed your advice and became king of Lanka. As a child you leapt at the distant sun, thinking it a sweet fruit. Carrying Rama's ring in your mouth, you crossed the ocean. Every difficult task in the world becomes easy by your grace.
Verses 21–24: You guard Rama's door; no one enters without your permission. Whoever takes refuge in you finds happiness and has nothing to fear. Only you can contain your power; the three worlds tremble at your roar. Ghosts and evil spirits do not come near when your name is spoken.
Verses 25–28: Constant chanting of your name destroys disease and pain. Hanuman frees from trouble everyone who remembers him in thought, word and deed. Rama is the supreme king, and you accomplish all his work; whoever comes to you with a wish receives its fruit in abundance.
Verses 29–32: Your glory shines in all four ages. You protect saints and good people and destroy the demons — beloved of Rama. Mother Sita blessed you to grant the eight siddhis and nine treasures. You hold the essence of devotion to Rama and remain forever his servant.
Verses 33–36: Through devotion to you one reaches Rama and forgets the sorrows of many births; at the end one goes to Rama's abode. There is no need to worship any other — serving Hanuman brings every happiness. Troubles end and pain disappears for whoever remembers the mighty Hanuman.
Verses 37–40: Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman — be kind to me as a guru is. Whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and finds great joy. Whoever reads the Hanuman Chalisa gains success — Shiva is the witness. Tulsidas, forever Hari's servant, prays: Lord, make your home in my heart.
Closing: Son of the Wind, remover of troubles, embodiment of auspiciousness — live in my heart together with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita.
