About Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, Singapore
The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple at 141 Serangoon Road is one of the oldest temples in Singapore and the spiritual heart of Little India. It is dedicated to Kali — 'Veeramakaliamman' means Kali the courageous — shown in her fierce form with a garland of skulls, defeating demons, alongside gentler images of Parvati with her sons Ganesha and Murugan.
Although it was founded by Bengali workers, who traditionally worship Kali, the temple is built in the South Indian Tamil (Dravidian) style, with a colourful gopuram facing Serangoon Road.
The temple is busy every day and especially during Deepavali, when Serangoon Road is lit up for weeks and a festive bazaar fills Little India. During the Japanese occupation of 1942–1945 the temple served as a refuge, sheltering and feeding people who had nowhere else to go.
History
Worship began at a small shrine on this site in 1855. The temple itself was built in 1881 by Bengali labourers who had come to work in Singapore, and it has been rebuilt and expanded since.
