Why is Satyanarayan Puja performed?

Families perform it to thank God for blessings and to pray for prosperity; the five chapters of the katha teach the value of keeping one's word.

Who performs it?

Very popular in North India, Maharashtra, Bengal (Satyanarayan / Satyapir), Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, and among families abroad.

When to perform it

Often on Purnima (full moon) evenings, but also on any happy occasion — a housewarming, wedding, birthday, new job or the safe return from a journey.

Preparing at home

Make a small mandap with banana leaves or stems, prepare panchamrit and the prasad (sheera with banana, or panjiri), and invite family and neighbours — the katha is meant to be heard together.

After the puja

Everyone receives prasad; it is considered important to accept and eat it. The katha teaches that keeping one’s promises to God brings blessings.

Regional traditions

Popular across North India, Maharashtra, Bengal (as Satyanarayan or Satyapir puja), Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, with small differences in prasad and the order of the katha.

Things to avoid

Don’t leave before the aarti and prasad — the katha itself warns against it.

Puja vidhi — step by step

  1. Ganesh puja — Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles, with akshat, flowers, durva grass and a sweet.
  2. Sankalp — The family sits facing east or north. The pandit states the date, place, family names and gotra, and the purpose of the puja; the host takes water in the right hand as a vow.
  3. Kalash sthapana — A kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut is set up and worshipped as the seat of the deities and sacred rivers.
  4. Navagraha puja — Worship of the nine planets.
  5. Satyanarayan puja — Shodashopachara puja of Lord Satyanarayan with tulsi and panchamrit.
  6. Katha — The five chapters of the Satyanarayan Katha are read.
  7. Havan (optional) — A short havan.
  8. Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.

Families and pandits follow different traditions; your pandit may add or skip steps.
