About Balaji Temple, San Jose
The Balaji Temple in San Jose is a Hindu temple and spiritual centre in the Alviso area of North San Jose, close to the heart of Silicon Valley. Its main deity is Lord Balaji (Venkateswara), and it also has shrines to Sai Baba and to Panduranga (Vitthal), the deity worshipped at Pandharpur in Maharashtra.
The temple serves a wide mix of families from across the South Bay. It celebrates all the major Hindu festivals — Maha Shivaratri, Navratri and Diwali draw the biggest crowds — and holds Guruvandana Puja in honour of the temple's founder. Regular bhajans, pujas and community meals make it a place where newly arrived families from India quickly find a community.
If you plan to visit on a festival day, expect large crowds and limited parking; arriving early and checking the temple's announcements is the best way to make the most of the day.
History
The temple was founded in 2006 by Swami Narayananda and first operated from a small space in Sunnyvale. As the community grew it moved to a larger building in San Jose, where the new centre was inaugurated with celebrations from 30 May to 3 June 2012. A shrine to Sai Baba and Panduranga was added in 2013.
