Why is Vastu Shanti Puja performed?

When a house has structural vastu issues or after renovation, the puja pacifies the vastu purusha and the directional deities.

Who performs it?

Done alone or together with Griha Pravesh; common in North and West India.

When to perform it

Usually together with Griha Pravesh, or after renovation or when a home has structural vastu concerns, on a muhurat chosen by the pandit.

Preparing at home

Discuss with the pandit which rooms or directions concern you. Keep the house clean, and space for a small havan with good ventilation.

After the puja

Some families keep a vastu yantra in the puja room afterwards and continue simple daily prayers.

Regional traditions

Performed widely in North and West India; in South India similar rites are part of the Ganapati Homam and Vastu Homam at a housewarming.

Things to avoid

Vastu Shanti does not replace structural safety — consult an engineer for real defects.

Puja vidhi — step by step

  1. Ganesh puja — Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles, with akshat, flowers, durva grass and a sweet.
  2. Sankalp — The family sits facing east or north. The pandit states the date, place, family names and gotra, and the purpose of the puja; the host takes water in the right hand as a vow.
  3. Kalash sthapana — A kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut is set up and worshipped as the seat of the deities and sacred rivers.
  4. Vastu mandala puja — Worship of the vastu purusha and the 45 deities of the vastu mandala.
  5. Navagraha puja — Prayers to the nine planets.
  6. Havan — Fire offerings with vastu mantras.
  7. Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.

Families and pandits follow different traditions; your pandit may add or skip steps.
