Rudrabhishek in Delhi · Hindi
Rudrabhishek is the bathing of the Shiva linga with water, milk, honey and other offerings while chanting the Sri Rudram, for peace, health and removal of difficulties.
Why is Rudrabhishek performed?
It is one of the most powerful forms of Shiva worship, done in Shravan, on Mondays, Maha Shivratri and for special prayers.
Who performs it?
Shiva devotees everywhere; at home with a pandit or at Shiva temples.
When to perform it
On Mondays, through the month of Shravan, on Maha Shivaratri and Pradosh days, or for special prayers.
Preparing at home
Keep a Shiva linga, the abhishek liquids (water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, sugarcane juice), 108 bel leaves and a pandit who can chant the Sri Rudram.
After the puja
The abhishek water is shared as charanamrit; bel leaves are kept as prasad.
Regional traditions
North Indian Rudrabhishek follows the Shukla Yajurveda; South Indian rituals chant the Rudram and Chamakam from the Krishna Yajurveda.
Things to avoid
Don’t offer tulsi or kumkum to the Shiva linga, and use only fresh bel leaves with three leaflets.
Puja vidhi — step by step
- Ganesh puja — Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles, with akshat, flowers, durva grass and a sweet.
- Sankalp — The family sits facing east or north. The pandit states the date, place, family names and gotra, and the purpose of the puja; the host takes water in the right hand as a vow.
- Abhishek — The linga is bathed with each liquid in turn while the Rudram is chanted.
- Shringar — Sandal, bhasma, bel leaves and flowers are offered.
- Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.
Families and pandits follow different traditions; your pandit may add or skip steps.
