Navagraha Puja in Port of Spain · Kannada
Navagraha Shanti puja honours the nine planets (Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, Ketu) to reduce difficulties attributed to planetary positions.
Why is Navagraha Puja performed?
Families perform it when a horoscope shows planetary doshas, before major life events, or as a general prayer for balance.
Who performs it?
Hindu families across traditions, usually with a pandit and a havan.
When to perform it
When a horoscope shows planetary doshas, before important life events, on one’s birthday, or on days linked to a particular planet.
Preparing at home
Share your horoscope details with the pandit if you have them. Keep the nine grains, nine coloured cloths and havan samagri.
After the puja
Pandits often suggest simple ongoing remedies such as charity on a particular weekday.
Regional traditions
South Indian temples have dedicated Navagraha shrines; the Navagraha temples around Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu are a well-known pilgrimage.
Things to avoid
Be wary of anyone who uses fear to sell expensive remedies — a simple, sincere puja is enough.
Puja vidhi — step by step
- Ganesh puja — Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles, with akshat, flowers, durva grass and a sweet.
- Sankalp — The family sits facing east or north. The pandit states the date, place, family names and gotra, and the purpose of the puja; the host takes water in the right hand as a vow.
- Kalash sthapana — A kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut is set up and worshipped as the seat of the deities and sacred rivers.
- Graha sthapana — The nine planets are invoked on a mandala with their grains and colours.
- Mantra jaap — Each planet's mantra is chanted.
- Havan — Fire offerings for each planet.
- Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.
Families and pandits follow different traditions; your pandit may add or skip steps.
