Why is Namkaran (Baby Naming Ceremony) performed?

One of the sixteen sanskaras, it formally gives the child a name chosen with care — often guided by the birth nakshatra — and seeks blessings for a long, healthy life.

Who performs it?

Hindu families everywhere. Some communities whisper the name into the baby's ear first; others write it on rice in a thali.

When to perform it

Traditionally on the 11th or 12th day after birth, when the period of ritual impurity ends; many families now choose a convenient auspicious day within the first months, avoiding Amavasya and Rikta tithis.

Preparing at home

Choose the name in advance — many families pick a first syllable linked to the baby’s birth nakshatra. Keep a thali of rice to write the name on, new clothes for the baby, and a quiet, warm room for the ceremony.

After the puja

Relatives bless the baby and often give gifts of silver or clothes. Some families also do the baby’s first outing (nishkramana) to a temple around this time.

Regional traditions

In Maharashtra the naming is part of the barsa ceremony with a cradle; in South India the name is whispered in the baby’s ear and written in rice; in Bengal and Bihar it may be combined with the chhathi ceremony on the sixth day.

Things to avoid

Keep the guest list small and the ceremony short — newborns tire quickly. Avoid smoky havan close to the baby.

Puja vidhi — step by step

  1. Ganesh puja — Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles, with akshat, flowers, durva grass and a sweet.
  2. Sankalp — The family sits facing east or north. The pandit states the date, place, family names and gotra, and the purpose of the puja; the host takes water in the right hand as a vow.
  3. Navagraha puja — Prayers to the nine planets for the child's wellbeing.
  4. Naming — The father (or elder) whispers the name in the baby's right ear and writes it on rice.
  5. Blessings — Elders bless the child.
  6. Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.

Families and pandits follow different traditions; your pandit may add or skip steps.
