Mahamrityunjaya Jaap in New Jersey · Hindi
A formal chanting of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra by pandits — 1,008, 11,000 or 1.25 lakh times — for recovery from illness, longevity and protection.
Why is Mahamrityunjaya Jaap performed?
Families arrange it when a loved one is unwell or for protection at difficult times.
Who performs it?
Families across India and abroad; large jaaps are done over several days by a group of pandits, often at a Shiva temple.
When to perform it
During illness, before surgery, for longevity, on birthdays, or during difficult periods in a horoscope.
Preparing at home
Decide the number of chants (1,008, 11,000 or 1.25 lakh) with the pandit — larger jaaps need several priests over days. Keep the name, gotra and nakshatra of the person for the sankalp.
After the puja
The jaap ends with a havan; the person for whom it is done is given the prasad and protective thread.
Regional traditions
Often performed at Jyotirlinga temples such as Trimbakeshwar and Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain), or at home with a group of pandits.
Things to avoid
Prayer is not a substitute for medical treatment — continue the doctor’s advice.
Puja vidhi — step by step
- Ganesh puja — Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles, with akshat, flowers, durva grass and a sweet.
- Sankalp — The family sits facing east or north. The pandit states the date, place, family names and gotra, and the purpose of the puja; the host takes water in the right hand as a vow.
- Jaap — Pandits chant the mantra the chosen number of times.
- Havan — A concluding havan with one-tenth the number of offerings.
- Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.
Families and pandits follow different traditions; your pandit may add or skip steps.
