Why is Lakshmi Puja performed?

Lakshmi blesses the household with prosperity, harmony and wellbeing.

Who performs it?

Hindu families everywhere; Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is especially important in Bengal and Odisha.

When to perform it

On Fridays, Sharad Purnima (Kojagari Lakshmi Puja), Varalakshmi Vratam, Dhanteras and Diwali.

Preparing at home

Clean the home, keep lotus or other flowers, a silver coin and kheer, and light lamps at the doorway to welcome the goddess.

After the puja

On Kojagari Purnima many families stay awake through the night, as the goddess is believed to bless those who are awake.

Regional traditions

Bengali and Odia families celebrate Kojagari Lakshmi Puja with alpana designs and coconut sweets; South Indian women observe Varalakshmi Vratam in Shravana.

Things to avoid

Keep the home clean and lamps lit — tradition says Lakshmi does not enter a dark or untidy house.

Puja vidhi — step by step

  1. Ganesh puja — Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles, with akshat, flowers, durva grass and a sweet.
  2. Sankalp — The family sits facing east or north. The pandit states the date, place, family names and gotra, and the purpose of the puja; the host takes water in the right hand as a vow.
  3. Lakshmi puja — Worship of the goddess with lotus, kumkum and kheer.
  4. Katha / stotra — Reading of Lakshmi stotra or vrat katha.
  5. Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.

Families and pandits follow different traditions; your pandit may add or skip steps.
