When to perform it

On Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami, with the main puja at midnight (Nishita kaal), when Krishna is believed to have been born. Some years Smarta and Vaishnava traditions observe it on different days.

Preparing at home

Decorate a cradle (jhula), prepare new clothes for Bal Gopal, and make panchamrit, makhan-mishri and panjiri for bhog.

After the puja

Devotees break the fast after the midnight puja or the next morning; in Maharashtra the next day brings the Dahi Handi celebrations.

Regional traditions

Mathura and Vrindavan hold grand celebrations; ISKCON temples worldwide hold midnight abhishek; Maharashtra celebrates Dahi Handi; South India draws small footprints of baby Krishna at the doorway.

Things to avoid

Fasting until midnight is hard for children and the elderly — many families allow fruit and milk.

  1. Fast — Devotees fast through the day.
  2. Midnight abhishek — At midnight Bal Gopal is bathed with panchamrit.
  3. Shringar — New clothes, flute and peacock feather.
  4. Jhula — The baby Krishna is rocked in a cradle.
  5. Aarti and prasad — The puja ends with aarti, pushpanjali (offering flowers), prayers for forgiveness of any mistakes, and distribution of prasad.
