Why is Holi Milan Puja (Holika Dahan) performed?

It recalls the protection of the devotee Prahlad and the burning of Holika — the victory of devotion over evil.

Who performs it?

Communities across North and West India and their diaspora; abroad often held as a community event.

When to perform it

Holika Dahan on Phalguna Purnima after sunset, once Bhadra has ended; Holi is played the next morning.

Preparing at home

Communities build the Holika pyre in advance from wood and cow-dung cakes. Families bring roli, rice, flowers, raw cotton thread, coconut and new wheat ears for the puja.

After the puja

Some people take a little ash from the Holika fire home as a blessing; Holi Milan gatherings with gulal and sweets follow the next day.

Regional traditions

Braj (Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana) celebrates over a week with Lathmar Holi; Bengal celebrates Dol Jatra; abroad, communities often hold Holi Milan events on the weekend.

Things to avoid

Keep children well back from the fire, and use natural, skin-safe colours the next day.

Puja vidhi — step by step

  1. Puja at the pyre — Roli, akshat, flowers and water are offered to the Holika pyre.
  2. Parikrama — Families walk around the pyre 3 or 7 times, winding raw cotton thread.
  3. Dahan — The pyre is lit at the muhurat; wheat ears are roasted in it.
  4. Holi Milan — The next day friends and families meet, apply gulal and share sweets.

Families and pandits follow different traditions; your pandit may add or skip steps.
