Festival pujas Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi Puja in Hyderabad · Telugu
Installing and worshipping a Ganesha idol at home on Ganesh Chaturthi, with pranapratishtha, shodashopachara puja, modak naivedya and visarjan.
Why is Ganesh Chaturthi Puja performed?
The festival celebrates the birth of Ganesha, remover of obstacles and patron of new beginnings.
Who performs it?
Especially Maharashtrian, Kannadiga, Telugu, Konkani and Tamil families, and families across India and abroad.
When to perform it
On Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, usually in August or September; the sthapana is done in the madhyahna (midday) period. Avoid looking at the moon on Chaturthi night, according to tradition.
Preparing at home
Bring home an eco-friendly clay idol, decorate a corner of the home, and prepare modak, durva grass and red flowers. Decide in advance how many days Ganesha will stay.
After the puja
On the visarjan day an uttar puja is performed, and the idol is immersed — at home in a bucket for clay idols. The dissolved clay can be poured into the garden or a plant pot.
Regional traditions
Maharashtra celebrates with grand public mandals and aartis like Sukhkarta Dukhharta; Karnataka with Gowri-Ganesha; Tamil Nadu with kozhukattai; Goa and Konkan with family celebrations and matoli decorations.
Things to avoid
Avoid plaster-of-Paris idols and chemical paints that harm water bodies; don’t leave the lamp unattended.
