Why is Diwali Lakshmi Puja performed?

Goddess Lakshmi is welcomed into a clean, well-lit home for prosperity in the coming year.

Who performs it?

Hindu families across India and the world; businesses also perform Chopda Pujan.

When to perform it

On Kartika Amavasya, in the evening during Pradosh Kaal, ideally in Sthir Lagna (Vrishabha). Exact times differ by city — check the Diwali page for your city.

Preparing at home

Clean and decorate the home, make a rangoli at the entrance, set up idols or pictures of Lakshmi and Ganesha, and keep kheel-batasha, sweets, coins and diyas ready.

After the puja

Lamps are kept burning through the night in many homes, sweets are shared with neighbours, and businesses open new account books.

Regional traditions

Bengal and Assam worship Kali on the same night; Gujarat celebrates the new year the next day; in South India Naraka Chaturdashi with an oil bath is the main day.

Things to avoid

Keep diyas away from curtains and children, and keep water nearby when using fireworks.
