How to Calculate Your Moolank, Bhagyank and Name Number

Step-by-step: your Moolank (birth number), Bhagyank (destiny number) and Naamank (name number) in Indian numerology, with worked examples.

Three numbers in Indian numerology

Indian numerology, or ank jyotish, links the numbers 1 to 9 with the nine planets (navagraha): 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. Three numbers are commonly calculated for a person.

1. Moolank — the birth number

Add the digits of the day you were born until you get a single digit. Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5, so your Moolank is 5. Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. The Moolank describes your nature and how you act day to day.

2. Bhagyank — the destiny number

Add all the digits of your full date of birth. For 23 August 1990: 2 + 3 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 32, then 3 + 2 = 5. The Bhagyank is said to show the direction of your life and the opportunities it brings.

3. Naamank — the name number

Indian numerology usually uses the Chaldean system to turn letters into numbers. Write the name you use most, give each letter its value, add them up and reduce to one digit.

ValueLetters
1A, I, J, Q, Y
2B, K, R
3C, G, L, S
4D, M, T
5E, H, N, X
6U, V, W
7O, Z
8F, P

In the Chaldean system no letter has the value 9, which is considered sacred. Example: RAVI = R 2 + A 1 + V 6 + I 1 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1.

Chaldean or Pythagorean?

Western numerology often uses the Pythagorean system (A = 1 … I = 9, J = 1 …). Results differ between the two, so use one system consistently. Most Indian numerologists use Chaldean values for names.

How the numbers are used

Families sometimes consider these numbers when choosing a baby's name, a business name or the spelling of a name, or when choosing dates. Numerology is traditional guidance; it should never replace practical judgement. You can work out all three numbers instantly with the calculator on the MyPujaWorld numerology page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Moolank and Bhagyank?

Why is there no 9 in Chaldean name numerology?

The number 9 is considered sacred in the Chaldean tradition, so no letter is given that value.
