About Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, Nadi
The Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple stands at the southern end of the main road through Nadi, on Fiji's main island Viti Levu, and is described as the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, it is both a centre of worship for the Indo-Fijian community and one of Fiji's best-known sights.
The temple was built in the Dravidian style of South India, following the principles of Vastu, and is famous for its brightly painted carvings of deities. Guided tours are available, but the inner sanctums are reserved for worshippers. Visitors should dress modestly and remove footwear.
The temple is run by the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI Sangam), the Fiji organisation of South Indian Hindus, which was founded at the old temple in 1926. For the Sangam's centenary in 2026, artisans from Tamil Nadu came to Nadi to repaint and restore the carvings.
History
A temple has stood on the site for a long time; TISI Sangam was formed in the old temple building in 1926. The foundation of a new temple was laid in 1976 during the Sangam's Golden Jubilee. A new lease of the land was obtained in 1983, the Bhoomi Puja took place in January 1984, and in 1984 Shivacharya Mahalinga Gurukkal arrived from Tamil Nadu as chief priest. Construction moved slowly at first, then resumed under a new reconstruction committee, and the new temple was consecrated on 15 July 1994.
