About Sri Meenakshi Temple, Pearland
The Sri Meenakshi Temple in Pearland, south of Houston, is a Dravidian-style temple dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, modelled on the great Meenakshi Temple of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. It stands on a five-acre site on McLean Road and is regarded as one of the oldest Hindu temples in the United States.
The temple is built in white granite in the South Indian tradition, with a rajagopuram (gateway tower) and corner shrines. Goddess Meenakshi is worshipped with her consort Sundareswarar (Shiva), and there are shrines to Venkateshwara, Lakshmi, Ganesha, Murugan with Valli and Deivanai, Rama, Ayyappan and Durga. The campus also has a kalyana mandapam (wedding hall), a canteen and a peacock sanctuary.
The temple is the heart of Houston's Tamil community, and its festivals follow the South Indian temple tradition, with Navratri and Diwali among the busiest times of the year.
History
The Sri Meenakshi Temple Society was formed in 1977. The temple's Mahakumbhabhishekam (consecration) took place in 1982, making it the third-oldest Hindu temple in the United States. It was designed by the renowned temple architect S. M. Ganapathy Sthapathi. The rajagopuram and corner temples were completed in 1995, and the Ganesha shrine was rebuilt in 2013.
