About Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Auckland
The Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Papatoetoe, South Auckland, is a temple of the Swaminarayan Sampraday under the ISSO of the NarNarayan Dev Gadi. It was the second Swaminarayan mandir in New Zealand.
The mandir is known for its interior: thousands of hours of work went into hand-carving its walls and ceilings in traditional Indian style, with carved pillars, mouldings and shikhars made by craftsmen from several countries. The central murtis are Ghanshyam Maharaj, NarNarayan Dev, Radha-Krishna Dev and the Ram Parivar, together with the family deities of the local community.
The mandir serves the Gujarati community of South Auckland in particular, and its festivals follow the Swaminarayan calendar, with Diwali and the Annakut among the high points of the year.
History
The temple was planned and built by the local community over about five years, with design and craftsmanship drawn from New Zealand, Hong Kong, India and Europe. The Murti Pran Pratishtha Mahotsav (deity installation ceremony) was conducted by Acharya Shree Koshalendraprasadji Maharaj on 24 March 2008. Dr Kantilal Patel and Mrs Ranjna Patel, who were involved in building the temple, were awarded the Queen's Service Medal for their community service.
