About Shivoham Shiva Temple
The Shivoham Shiva Temple on Old Airport Road in Murugeshpalya is known across Bengaluru for its giant statue of Lord Shiva: a 65-foot figure seated in meditation, holding the damaru and trishula, with the river Ganga flowing from his hair, set against a backdrop styled after Mount Kailash. Beside it stands a 32-foot statue of Ganesha, and at the entrance is a 25-foot linga, described as the largest in the city.
Inside, the temple recreates famous pilgrimages for those who cannot travel to them: a man-made cave reproduces the Amarnath yatra with a replica ice linga, and another artificial cave holds replicas of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The temple also has 'healing stones' at its sanctuary.
The temple receives an estimated half a million worshippers and visitors a year. Maha Shivaratri is its biggest day, with 100,000–150,000 devotees, all-night bhajans and jagarana, and a light and sound show. Arrive early on festival days and expect long queues.
History
The temple was completed and consecrated on 26 February 1995 by the Shankaracharya of Sringeri; the Shiva murti was sculpted by Kashinath. The Ganesha statue was unveiled on 1 March 2003 by Dada J. P. Vaswani. Originally called Shiv Mandir, it was renamed Shivoham Shiva Temple in 2016. The temple supports the A.i.R Humanitarian Homes, which care for up to 600 residents in Bengaluru.
