About Malibu Hindu Temple
The Malibu Hindu Temple sits in the Santa Monica Mountains on Las Virgenes Canyon Road in Calabasas, a short drive from Malibu and the San Fernando Valley. Run by the Hindu Temple Society of Southern California, it is one of the oldest and best-known Hindu temples in the Los Angeles area.
The temple is built in the Dravidian style of South India, with a gopuram-style tower, although it is made of concrete rather than stone. It has two levels: the upper temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, and the lower temple to Lord Shiva. Corner shrines honour Rama, Lakshmi, Bhudevi and Krishna, and there is a separate shrine to Hanuman.
The canyon setting makes a visit feel like a small pilgrimage away from the city. Weekends and festivals — especially Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Maha Shivaratri and Diwali — are the busiest times, and parking on the hillside fills quickly.
History
The Hindu Temple Society of Southern California built the temple from 1981, on a quiet hillside site in the Santa Monica Mountains. It has served the region's South Indian and wider Hindu community ever since, and remains a familiar landmark to Indian families in Los Angeles.
