About Kote Venkataramana Temple
The Kote Venkataramana Temple on Krishnarajendra Road is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara. 'Kote' means fort in Kannada: the temple stands beside the remains of Bengaluru's old fort and next to Tipu Sultan's summer palace, built on the site of the Wodeyars' former residence.
The temple combines Dravidian and Vijayanagara styles. A vestibule connects the sanctum to a central hall whose ceiling rests on pillars made of clustered colonettes alternating with yalis (mythical lions) facing all four directions. The outer walls are plain except for a frieze of deity sculptures along the base; the overall decoration is modest and follows the temple plan used in the Mysore palace complex.
Vaikuntha Ekadashi is the main festival, when thousands of devotees queue to pass through the Vaikuntha dwara. The temple is an easy stop on a heritage walk that takes in Tipu Sultan's palace, the fort and the bustling K.R. Market nearby. It also features as the setting of a treasure hunt in the children's book Riddle of the Seventh Stone.
History
The temple was built in 1689 by Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar, ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore, beside the old fort of Bengaluru. The neighbouring royal residence later became Tipu Sultan's palace.
