About BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Houston
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Stafford, south-west Houston, is a hand-carved marble and limestone mandir and the largest of its kind in Texas. It stands about 73 feet tall on a 22-acre campus and is open to visitors of every faith.
The mandir is made of Italian marble and Turkish limestone carved by some 3,000 craftsmen in India into about 33,000 pieces, which were shipped to Texas and assembled like a giant jigsaw. Inside are shrines to Bhagwan Swaminarayan and Gunatitanand Swami, Radha-Krishna, Shiva-Parvati, Sita-Rama, Hanuman and Ganesha.
The campus also has a carved wooden haveli used for assemblies and an exhibition, Understanding Hinduism, that introduces visitors to Hindu beliefs and culture. Diwali and Annakut are the busiest days, when Houston families come in large numbers for darshan.
History
Construction began in March 2002 and the mandir was built in about 28 months, opening in 2004. It has since become a centre for the Gujarati community and for visits from schools and interfaith groups across Houston.
