Why is Saraswati Puja Vidhi performed?

Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, music and the arts.

Who performs it?

Students and families everywhere; a major festival in Bengal, Bihar and Odisha.

When to perform it

On Vasant Panchami (Magha Shukla Panchami), in the morning purvahna period. It marks the start of spring.

Preparing at home

Wear yellow, keep yellow flowers, palash, ber (kul) fruit and sweets, and place books, pens and musical instruments before the goddess.

After the puja

Books stay with the goddess until the next day, when they are taken back after a small puja; the idol is immersed in community pujas.

Regional traditions

In Bengal students traditionally don’t eat kul (ber) until it is offered to Saraswati; in Bihar and Odisha schools and colleges hold large pujas; in South India Saraswati Puja falls during Navaratri instead.

Things to avoid

Students sometimes skip studies for days — the tradition is to rest books for just the puja day.
