Ayodhya Travel Guide — Temples and Ghats to Visit Besides Ram Mandir
Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Nageshwarnath, the Sarayu ghats and Ram ki Paidi, Deepotsav at Diwali and Ram Navami — a pilgrim's guide to the sacred city of Ayodhya.
The city of Rama
Ayodhya, on the Sarayu river, is one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism and, in the Ramayana, the capital of the Ikshvaku kings and the birthplace of Rama. It is also sacred to Jains as the birthplace of five tirthankaras, including Rishabhanatha. Since the opening of the Ram Mandir it has become one of the most visited places in India.
Temples and holy places
- Hanuman Garhi — a hilltop fort-temple of Hanuman, traditionally visited before the Ram Mandir; it is in the care of the Nirvani Akhara of the Ramanandi sampradaya.
- Kanak Bhawan — the "golden palace", believed to have been Kaikeyi's gift to Sita after her marriage, with beautiful images of Sita and Rama.
- Nageshwarnath Temple — an ancient Shiva temple near the Sarayu, traditionally said to have been founded by Kusha, Rama's son.
- Ram ki Paidi and the Sarayu ghats — the riverfront where pilgrims bathe and evening aarti is held; Guptar Ghat, where Rama is said to have entered the Sarayu, is a little upstream.
- Dashrath Mahal and the many smaller temples of Ramkot.
Festivals
- Ram Navami — the birth of Rama, the biggest day of the year in Ayodhya.
- Deepotsav — on the eve of Diwali, lakhs of diyas are lit along the Sarayu ghats; the Uttar Pradesh government has set several world records for the most oil lamps lit.
- Vivah Panchami — the wedding anniversary of Rama and Sita (Margashirsha Shukla Panchami).
- Panchkosi and Chaudahkosi parikrama — circuits of the sacred city walked by pilgrims in Kartika.
Tips
Visit early in the morning and avoid festival weekends if you dislike crowds. Carry little — phones and bags are not allowed in several temples — and check official timings on each temple's notice board or website.
