How to Do Aarti at Home — Step by Step for Children
A simple, safe aarti that children can do with a parent every evening.
What is aarti?
Aarti is a way of saying thank you to God with light, a song and a bell. It takes about five minutes.
You will need
- A small plate (thali)
- A diya with ghee, or a battery tea-light for little ones
- A flower and a little rice
- A bell
Steps
- Wash your hands and sit or stand quietly in front of the altar.
- A grown-up lights the diya and puts it on the plate.
- Ring the bell and sing an aarti — "Om Jai Jagdish Hare" is the easiest to learn.
- Move the plate gently in a clockwise circle in front of God — slowly and carefully.
- Offer the flower and rice.
- Hold your hands over the flame (not too close!) and touch them to your eyes — taking the blessing.
- Fold your hands and say a prayer or "thank you" for something good today.
Safety
Always do aarti with an adult, tie back long hair and keep sleeves away from the flame.
Why do we do aarti?
Aarti comes from a Sanskrit word for removing darkness. Moving the lamp in front of God is like saying, “You are my light.” It is also a lovely way for the family to end the day together, even if it is only for five minutes before dinner.
Which way do I move the plate?
Hold the plate with both hands and move it slowly in a clockwise circle in front of the deity — many families circle a few times at the feet, then the middle, then the face. There is no single “right” number; follow what your family does.
Easy aartis to learn
- Om Jai Jagdish Hare — the most common aarti in North Indian homes
- Jai Ganesh Deva — short and easy to sing
- The Gayatri Mantra — a short prayer for wisdom
Each page has the words in Hindi, in English letters and with the meaning, so children who don't read Hindi can join in.
Make it a habit
Pick a fixed time, let children take turns ringing the bell, lighting (with help) or holding the plate, and end by sharing one good thing that happened today. Small, regular moments build a lasting connection to tradition.
