Ruby (Manik (माणिक्य, Manikya)) — Gemstone of Sun (Surya): Benefits, How to Wear

Ruby (Manik (माणिक्य, Manikya)) is the gemstone of Sun (Surya) in Vedic astrology. Who traditionally wears it, the finger, day, metal and mantra, substitutes and cautions.

Ruby and Sun (Surya)

Ruby, known in Hindi as Manik (माणिक्य, Manikya), is the gemstone of Sun (Surya) in the Navaratna, the nine gems of Vedic astrology. Gemologically it is a red variety of the mineral corundum. The Sun is the king of the planets, the significator of the soul (atma), father, authority and government. Ruby is said to bring its warmth: self-confidence, a commanding presence and good relations with superiors.

Who traditionally wears Ruby?

Astrologers usually suggest Ruby for people with Simha lagna, or for whom the Sun is a strong benefic in the chart — for confidence, leadership, vitality and recognition. The choice depends on the whole birth chart — the ascendant (lagna), the house Sun (Surya) rules and occupies, its strength, and the dasha running — not on the Moon sign alone. A planet that is a functional malefic for your lagna is usually not strengthened with a gemstone.

How to wear Ruby

  1. Get the stone tested and certified as natural and untreated (or with the treatment disclosed).
  2. Set it in gold or copper so that the stone touches the skin, as is traditional.
  3. On Sunday, at sunrise, wash the ring in raw milk or Ganga jal, then clean water.
  4. Light a lamp and incense, and chant the mantra ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः 108 times, or as your astrologer advises.
  5. Wear it on the ring finger of the working hand (traditionally the right hand).

Cautions

Traditionally not combined with blue sapphire, diamond or hessonite (the stones of Saturn, Venus and Rahu). Remove the stone if you feel it does not suit you, and consult your astrologer. Weight and quality recommendations (in carats or ratti) vary widely between astrologers.

Substitutes

If the main stone is unaffordable, astrologers often suggest an upratna (substitute) such as red garnet, red spinel, considered milder in effect. Chanting the planet's mantra, charity on its day and fasting are traditional remedies that need no stone at all.

Gemstone recommendations are part of traditional Vedic astrology (jyotish) and practices differ between astrologers and regions. They are not a substitute for medical, financial or legal advice, and no result is guaranteed. Consult an experienced astrologer with your full birth chart before wearing a strong stone, and buy only natural stones with a certificate from a recognised gem-testing laboratory.
