Vasant Panchami 2027

What is Vasant Panchami?

Vasant Panchami — also called Basant Panchami or Saraswati Puja — falls on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright half of the month of Magha, usually in late January or February. It welcomes the spring season (vasant) and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, art and wisdom.

It is especially important in West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Assam, Tripura and Nepal, where schools, colleges and homes worship Saraswati, and in Punjab and North India, where it is celebrated as the arrival of spring with yellow clothes and kites.

Why is Vasant Panchami celebrated?

Saraswati is believed to have appeared on this day, bringing speech, learning and music to creation. Students pray to her for wisdom and success, musicians and artists honour their instruments and tools, and the day is considered auspicious for beginning education. In many families a young child writes their first letters on this day — Vidyarambham or Hate Khori.

Yellow is the colour of the festival: it represents the mustard fields in bloom, the brightness of spring and Saraswati's own blessing of knowledge.

How is Saraswati Puja performed?

• Clean the puja place and set up an image or idol of Saraswati on a white or yellow cloth.
• Place books, pens, musical instruments and tools of your work near the goddess — they are not used on the day of the puja.
• Offer white and yellow flowers, especially marigolds and palash, sandalwood paste, rice, fruits (in Bengal, the first ber/kul fruit of the season is traditionally offered to Saraswati), and sweets such as kesari bhaat, boondi or khichdi.
• Recite the Saraswati Vandana "Ya Kundendu Tushara Hara Dhavala" and offer pushpanjali.
• Perform aarti and share prasad. Many students fast until the puja is complete.

Vasant Panchami traditions across India

In Bengal, Saraswati Puja is one of the most loved festivals of the year: schools and colleges set up pandals, girls wear yellow saris, and the day is fondly remembered as an occasion for young people to celebrate together. In Bihar, community pujas fill the streets and the idols are immersed the next day. In Punjab and parts of North India, Basant is celebrated with yellow clothes, yellow sweet rice and kite-flying. In Odisha, children begin their education with Khadi Chuan. Temples of Saraswati, such as Basar in Telangana, see large crowds of families bringing children for Akshar Abhyasam.

Vasant Panchami abroad

Bengali, Bihari and Odia associations around the world organise Saraswati Puja on the nearest weekend, often with a cultural programme by children. At home, a simple puja with a picture of Saraswati, yellow flowers, the children's books and a short vandana keeps the tradition alive.

What is the message of Vasant Panchami?

Vasant Panchami celebrates learning as something sacred. By placing books and instruments before the goddess, families remind children that knowledge, art and music are gifts to be honoured and shared — a fitting way to welcome spring.
