What is Baisakhi?

Baisakhi (Vaisakhi) marks the solar new year and the harvest of the rabi crop, falling on the day the Sun enters Mesha (Aries) — usually 13 or 14 April. In Punjab and Haryana it is a joyful harvest festival, when farmers give thanks for the ripened wheat. For Sikhs it is also one of the most important days of the year: on Vaisakhi in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib.

The solar new year across India

The same Mesha Sankranti is the new year or a harvest festival in many regions:

  • Puthandu — the Tamil new year, with a tray of fruits, flowers and a mirror viewed first thing in the morning, and mango pachadi.
  • Vishu — the Kerala new year, with the Vishukkani arrangement of golden konna flowers, rice, fruit and a lamp, Vishu kaineettam gifts and crackers.
  • Bohag (Rongali) Bihu — the Assamese new year, with Bihu dances, songs and pitha.
  • Pohela Boishakh — the Bengali new year (on or a day after Mesha Sankranti), with new account books (haal khata) and processions.
  • Pana Sankranti in Odisha, Juda Sheetal in Mithila and Bisu in Tulu Nadu.

How is Baisakhi celebrated?

In Punjab, people visit gurdwaras and temples in the morning, many after a dip in a river or holy tank. Village fairs (melas) fill the day with bhangra and giddha, wrestling, food stalls and music. Gurdwaras hold kirtan and Nagar Kirtan processions led by the Panj Pyare, and serve langar to all. Hindu families also take a holy dip, worship the Sun and give charity.

Baisakhi abroad

Some of the world's largest Vaisakhi processions take place outside India — in Surrey and Vancouver in Canada, in Southall and Leicester in the UK, and in New York — drawing hundreds of thousands of people. Check your local gurdwara and community calendar for the procession date, which is often the nearest weekend.
