What is Akshaya Tritiya?

Akshaya Tritiya, also called Akha Teej, falls on the third day (Tritiya) of the bright half of the month of Vaishakha, usually in April or May. "Akshaya" means imperishable: whatever good is done on this day — charity, prayer, a new beginning — is believed to bring lasting, undiminishing results. It is one of the few days considered so auspicious that no separate muhurat is needed for important beginnings.

Why is Akshaya Tritiya special?

Many traditions meet on this day. It is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. It is said to be the day the Ganga descended to earth, the day Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha, and the day Krishna gave Draupadi the akshaya patra — the vessel that never emptied. Another story tells of Sudama, Krishna's poor childhood friend, who visited him with a handful of beaten rice and returned to find his home filled with plenty. In Odisha, construction of the chariots for the Puri Rath Yatra begins on Akshaya Tritiya, and the doors of the Badrinath and Kedarnath temples usually reopen around this time after winter.

How is Akshaya Tritiya observed?

  • Puja: families worship Vishnu and Lakshmi with tulsi, flowers, rice and sweets; some also worship Kubera and Ganesha.
  • Daan (charity): giving water pots, fans, umbrellas, food, clothes and grain to those in need is considered especially meritorious, as summer begins.
  • New beginnings: weddings, griha pravesh, starting a business, beginning a course of study or buying property are often planned for this day.
  • Gold: buying gold or silver is a popular custom, as a symbol of lasting prosperity — though the scriptures emphasise charity over buying.
  • Farming: in many villages it marks the start of the agricultural season.

Akshaya Tritiya across communities

For Jains, the day commemorates Lord Rishabhanatha breaking his year-long fast with sugarcane juice, and many Jains end their Varshitap fast on Akshaya Tritiya. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, Akha Teej is a popular day for weddings. In Bengal, traders open new account books (Haal Khata) at Ganesh and Lakshmi puja. In Odisha, farmers begin sowing and the Rath Yatra chariot construction starts in Puri.

How to observe Akshaya Tritiya at home

Bathe early, light a lamp before Vishnu and Lakshmi, and offer tulsi, flowers, rice and a sweet. Decide on a good deed — feeding someone, donating to a cause, helping a neighbour — and do it on the day. If you are starting something new, begin it with a short prayer to Ganesha.
