Bhagavad Gita Chapter 12 — Bhakti Yoga (The Yoga of Devotion)
The shortest chapter: devotion to a personal God is the easiest path, and Krishna lists the qualities of the devotee who is dear to him.
What happens in Chapter 12
Arjuna asks which is better: worshipping God with form, or meditating on the formless, imperishable Absolute. Krishna answers that those who fix their minds on him with faith are the best in yoga; the path of the formless is harder for embodied beings. He then gives a ladder of practice: fix your mind on me; if you cannot, practise; if you cannot practise, work for me; if you cannot do even that, give up the fruits of your actions.
The second half is a beloved portrait of the ideal devotee: free from hatred, friendly and compassionate, without possessiveness or ego, equal in joy and sorrow, forgiving, content, steady, neither disturbing the world nor disturbed by it. "Such a devotee is dear to me", Krishna repeats.
